3x3 Basketball: From the Streets to the Olympic

WHAT IS 3x3 BASKETBALL?

3×3 Basketball (pronounced “three-ex-three”) is a fast-paced, high-energy variation of traditional basketball that’s taking the world by storm. The game is played on a half-court with one basket, and each team is composed of 4 players (3 players on the court and 1 substitute). The game typically lasts for 10 minutes, and the first team to score 21 points or more wins, even if it’s before the end of regular playing time. With a 12-second shot clock, the game is quicker and more intense than the traditional 5-on-5 version, making it exciting for both players and spectators. In 3×3 Basketball,The ball used is slightly different, being of size 6 but with the weight of a size 7. To start each game, a coin toss is performed. Scoring is straightforward: a shot inside the arc earns one point, while a shot made behind the arc is worth two points.

When and Where Did 3×3 Basketball Start?
While informal half-court games have been played for decades in neighborhoods and parks around the world, 3×3 basketball was formalized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in 2007. It made its international debut at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and has grown rapidly ever since. In 2020, 3×3 Basketball was officially included in the Olympic Games held in Tokyo, marking a huge milestone for the sport.
Today, 3×3 Basketball is one of the fastest-growing urban sports globally. It has its own professional circuit (FIBA 3×3 World Tour), national team competitions, and youth development programs. The sport is embraced by both grassroots and elite players for its accessibility, pace, and global appeal. Whether on an outdoor court in a city plaza or under arena lights in international tournaments, 3×3 has carved out its unique place in the basketball world.
